Introduction
Nepal Jesuit Social Institute (NJSI) was established by Nepal Jesuit Society (NJS) aftermath of the massive earthquake which hit Nepal on 25th April and 12th May 2015. Since its inception on May 19th NJSI has been actively involved in relief, recovery and rehabilitation process in eleven worst affected district of Nepal. The society started immediate relief work from 27th April 2015 before officially setting up the office to support and accompany the earthquake survivors thorough different affiliated institutions and volunteers. NJSI launched “Nepal Earthquake Relief and Rehabilitation Program” to assist the earthquake survivors with an aim of strengthening hope among them. The initial relief phase constituted mostly distribution of relief materials like: tarpaulins, blankets, mats, rice, cereals, pulse, oil, sugar, salt, gram etc to the most needed survivors. NJSI also began medical relief services immediately in worst hit districts.
A relief work is divided into several stages.
The first three months post the disaster was the period of immediate relief activity in our context. The complex and partly inaccessible geography of the nation made our relief work challenging. The first among them was to reach the left alone survivors of the disaster and accompany them to recover from the disaster.
In next three months the institution shifted its focus towards educational sector. It has been successfully supporting schools in 11 districts. The institution explored all the possibilities of assistance in repair and reconstruction of classrooms, shelter and livelihood options by establishing its district offices for easy accesses to the districts.
A brief detail of in several earthquake affected districts is mentioned below.
Sindhupalchok District:
NJS (and various NJS community) immediately rushed with relief materials like tarpaulins mats, rice, beaten rice and dry fruits for distribution in Thulo Dhading, Kalika VDC . We also assisted 900 families in Lisankhu and Thokpara VDC medically through our health camps. After supporting the most needed families our focus shifted towards educational intervention. In this process we supported 1566 students of 13 different schools of Mankha VDC with stationeries (notebooks, pencil, sharpener, eraser, geometry box, pen and color pencil), school bags and text books and school uniform. We went on to support a school in Mahankal VDC with 90 pieces of CGI sheets and 67 sets of school kits which includes the stationeries mentioned above. In the process of immediate relief we also assisted a school in Talmarang VDC with 50 pieces of CGI sheets for constructing TLC. The immediate relief work continued for a period of three months from May to July.
The institution started exploring other possible sector to support earthquake survivors for next phase however keeping in mind the students from different schools. We extended our materials assistance based on the needs of the survivor. In the process we helped schools in Mankha and Thulodhading, Mahankal and Talamarang and Sanga Chowk VDC by availing them furniture for students as well as teachers, white boards. As a part of winterization plan NJSI distributed sets of tracksuits, sweaters, shoes and socks. The institution also conducted teachers training to 26 teachers with 4 officials. The work on construction and repair of the 8 schools of Mankha is going on its full swing. The options with shelter support and livelihood planning is on its way. We have been responding to the needs of survivor in the best possible way.

Kathmandu District:
Kathmandu - many concrete buildings in the city survived the earthquake but old houses, houses built in unstable areas, medieval monuments, temples and monasteries, mostly built of clay, are all damaged or destroyed. Most homes in rural villages in the district have been badly damaged. Ancient Newari town of Sankhu totally destroyed. 20% of houses destroyed, 1222 human casualties, and 250 of 299 government schools destroyed.
NJS was involved in unique post earthquake emergency intervention in Kathmandu district. We distributed relief materials to the most needed ones in this district too. We assisted 200 families in Baniyataar by providing them with relief materials like beaten rice (50 sacks), noodles (30 cartoons), and shawl (50 pieces). Apart from distributing relief materials the volunteers from St. Xavier’s College Maitighar were involved in clearing debris in north Kathmandu. In the process 25 families were benefitted in Goldhunga and Kumaltaar, 15 families in Kabhresthali, 17 families in Chougaoun and 12 families in Dhitalthok. NJS also conducted health camps and sanitation program in Balaju Bypass and Sankhu. In educational sector we assisted some 150 migrated students from nearby districts in Danchhi VDC by availing them with school kits. Later we went on to provide 75 sets of school furniture and 10 white boards to the same school in emergency period only.
There is not much scope of intervention in this district, as being the main centre of the nation it has all the required resources and numerous organizations working towards the betterment of the earthquake survivors. NJSI took a new approach of intervention in Kathmandu district. We supported survivors who had migrated from nearby districts to Kathmandu aftermath of the disastrous earthquake in order to sustain their lives. The same approach was applied in educational intervention also. We continued to assist schools who admitted large number of students migrating from nearby districts. In the process NJSI supported the migrating survivor families with food kits and CGI sheets for temporary shelters for 180 families. A school was availed with classrooms and office furniture in the process of educational intervention.

Dolakha District:
NJSI was involved in educational sector in Dolakha district. Most of the institutions’ relief work was based on its own ground presence. The districts were supported with reliable information from sources of Nepal Jesuit Society. We could not reach the district immediately with food and shelter assistance. However, we assisted 746 students of three different schools in Babre VDC by availing them with school kits, textbooks, white boards and classroom furniture.
In the next phase, NJSI broadened its approach by intervening in other sector like shelter. We also supported poor families with food kits. NJSI undertook the responsibility to support Surel families of Suri VDC with shelter requirements. As a result we distributed 444 bundles of CGI sheets to the families of the same VDC. In educational sector NJSI kept exploring all the possibilities of assistance. We assisted in repairing toilet facilities of a school in the district. We also distributed school kits and white boards (24) in schools of Suri VDC.

In Tarkebari VDC of Okhaldhunga district NJSI assisted 160 families with relief materials that included dry food, beaten rice (40 sacks), noodles (80 cartoons). These distributions were the results of requests from different personnel in the district. Since we are not working for long term in Okhaldhunga and Bhaktpur district, the institution did not consider supporting the survivors of these districts in next phase of intervention. Thus in emergency relief period we supported around 5810 families, 2904 students and a thousand individuals.
